Early days of Switchfoot

Switchfoot was founded in 1996 as Chin Up, consisting of Jon Foreman and his brother Tim, along with Chad Butler on drums. After playing only a few shows, the band was contacted by music industry veteran Charlie Peacock and eventually signed to his indie label Re:think Records under the current moniker, Switchfoot. Re:think went on to distribute the first three Switchfoot albums, The Legend of Chin, New Way to Be Human, and Learning to Breathe. Because Re:think was bought out by Christian giant Sparrow Records before Switchfoot's first release, however, the band's and Peacock's intentions of being marketed outside of the Contemporary Christian music scene and reaching a wider audience were put on hold. Consequently, the band was mostly marketed exclusively to Christian radio and retail outlets early in their careers, a time Jon Foreman has described as when "half of who we were was lost."

Of Switchfoot's first three albums, Learning to Breathe was the most successful, being certified gold by the RIAA, and receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album.

Later on in 2002, Switchfoot's music was featured prominently in the movie A Walk to Remember, starring singer and actress Mandy Moore, who sang Switchfoot's song "Only Hope" during a scene in the movie. The movie's soundtrack album also featured a duet with Jon Foreman and Moore, as well as four other Switchfoot songs from the band's previous catalogue, in addition to Moore's cover of "Only Hope".

Drew Shirley-newest member of Switchfoot

Andrew (Drew) Philip Shirley was born on April 3, 1974. He is a guitarist and the newest member of the alternative rock band Switchfoot. Shirley attended California Baptist University studying a Fine Arts degree with a Music minor. During that time he also started and led various school bands and shows. He had only started playing guitar as a senior in high school. After graduating from college, he also began working with YFC as the Riverside area Campus Life director, working with local high schools.

Shirley played in the band All Together Separate in the late 1990s along with fellow CBU classmates Dex Alexander (singer), Ben Rayls(drummer), and Charles Rumahlewang (bass). The band toured nationally, but was cut short after breaking up in 2002.

He started touring with Switchfoot soon after their 2003 release The Beautiful Letdown. He has recorded three albums with the band, his first,Nothing Is Sound, was released September 13, 2005, his second Oh! Gravity., was released December 26, 2006. His third, Switchfoot's seventh studio album, Hello Hurricane, was released November 10, 2009. He lives with his wife, Jenna, and their daughters, Lauren and Violet.

Between leaving All Together Separate and his transition to Switchfoot, Shirley produced and played guitar on many different band projects. He still produces and plays on various musical projects.

Jerome has played in several bands notably with industrial rock band Mortal and Fold Zandura, with long time musical partner Jyro Xhan. He currently plays with alternative rock band Switchfoot as a guitar and keyboard player.

In 1985 Fontamillas Graduated from Monterey Bay Academy in Watsonville, CA. Fontamillas is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. In 1988 Fontamillas, Jyro Xhan, Ray Tongpo and Wilson Peralta released a six song demo tape called Wish Fifteen on Blue Genius Music as Mortal Wish. Four years later they signed with Intense Records and became simply Mortal. Fontamillas would continue to play with Mortal until 1996 and played in Fold Zandura (also with Jyro) between 1995 and 1999.

In 2000, Fontamillas quit his day job and ended up joining and touring with Switchfoot shortly after the release of their third album, Learning to Breathe. His first release with Switchfoot was their 2003 release, The Beautiful Letdown. In 2002 Jyro and Fontamillas released a Mortal reunion album called Nu-En-Jin. He married his wife Kristi in December 2005.

Butler Co-Founded Switchfoot band

Chad Matthew Butler was born on 24 March 1974, he is the drummer for the band Switchfoot which he co-founded along with Jon and Tim Foreman in 1996. Butler lived in Amsterdam for a few years, but he and his family later moved to San Diego, California where he now lives with his wife Tina (who he married in 1999), his three children, Evan (born in 2001) and Dylan, and his daughter, Charlotte (born in summer of 2007). He is currently teaching his oldest to play the drums, and enjoys taking all his kids out to the beach.

As a kid, Butler dreamed of being a doctor but in Junior High, he developed an interest in drumming when he received his first drum set. He met future bandmate Jon Foreman on their high school water polo team and the two became friends.

Butler is a '97 UCSD Alumnus and earned a History of Science degree, a business degree and taught surfing. Chad played in a variety of local bands throughout college, before joining with Jon and Tim Foreman to form the band Chin Up, later to be known as Switchfoot.

Butler cites Stevie Wonder, Foo Fighters, The Beatles, The Police, and U2 as some of his larger musical influences. He also endorses Tama Drums, currently playing their white Starclassic B/B set with chrome hardware. Butler is also endorsed by Paiste cymbals and pro-mark drumsticks.

Who is Tim Foreman?

Timothy (Tim) David Foreman was born on August 15, 1978 is the bassist for the band Switchfoot. He was born in Lake Arrowhead, California but grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and Virginia Beach, Virginia. He and his family later moved to San Diego, California, where he now resides with his wife Andrea (whom he married in 2001), their son Jethro (Jett), born in April 2005, and daughter Layla.

He graduated from San Dieguito Academy in 1997, where he graduated under the title of 'Scholar Athlete' for his high achievements in surfing and education. He is the youngest member of Switchfoot at 32; their first album The Legend of Chin was released only four days after he graduated from high school. His brother Jon Foreman is the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for Switchfoot. He has also cowritten a number of Switchfoot's songs along with Jon.

Among Foreman's main musical influences are Paul McCartney and The Beatles. He has been playing bass since the 5th grade, but has never taken any formal lessons. He has also been taking piano since he was three years old.

Tim designed the cover for Switchfoot's albums Learning to Breathe and The Beautiful Letdown.

Switchfoot first came to mainstream attention when four of their songs were included in the 2002 movie A Walk to Remember. In 2008, they also wrote and recorded a song for the film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Switchfoot is made up of Jon Foreman (vocals/guitar), Tim Foreman (bass), Chad Butler (drums), Jerome Fontamillas (keys/guitar) and Drew Shirley (guitar). The band is known for their high energy live shows driven by hard-charging guitar riffs.

Jerome Fontamillas, the band’s touring keyboardist/guitarist since 2000, is 100% Filipino. Born in Pasay City, Philippines, Jerome moved to America when he was just 3 years old. He has been playing music for most of his life and official became a member of the band in 2003.

Jon Foreman

Jonathan Mark Foreman was born on October 22, 1976 is the lead singer, lead guitarist, main songwriter and co-founder of the alternative rock band Switchfoot. He started Switchfoot in 1996.

Foreman was born in San Bernadino County, California, but his family moved to Massachusetts and Virginia Beach during his childhood. There he became fast friends with Todd Cooper, who encouraged him to learn guitar. Cooper was later a guitar tech for Switchfoot, although he left in 2005 to pursue his own musical career. After several years, Foreman and his family moved back to Southern California, this time settling in San Diego. Foreman attended UC San Diego and later dropped out to follow his singing career.

One of his favorite pastimes is surfing and when not in tour, he spent moments with his wife Emily Foreman in San Diego, California. He is a committed evangelical Christian. Some of his musical influences are The Beatles, Nirvana, and Radiohead.

In 2001, Jon was awarded the " Les Paul Horizon Award" for the most promising up-and-coming guitarist at the annual Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards in Los Angeles.

In September 2009, Jazz musician Karl Denson released the album "Brother's Keeper" in which two songs were co-written by Foreman, and one song, "Drums of War", was solely written by Foreman. Foreman also provided his vocals in accompaniment with Denson on the song "Drums of War".

Foreman has also worked on various solo projects, independently releasing four EPs, titled Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.

In October 2008, Foreman released a collection of songs from his seasonal EPs along with two new tracks. The collection is entitled Limbs and Branches. In April 2009, he was GMA Dove Award-nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year.

Foreman has always aimed to use interesting instrumentation when writing for Switchfoot, mostly on some of the band's first albums such as The Legend of Chin, New Way to Be Human, and Learning to Breathe.

The Grammy Award announcements are in, and Switchfoot has been nominated for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album for "Hello Hurricane!" This is the second time they have been nominated for a Grammy, and the first time since "Learning to Breathe" received the same honor back in 2001.

greetings everybody!

I've got some exciting news: after several years of trying to make things work over at Columbia we have officially severed our ties with sony to pursue making music independently. We are thankful for the incredible success that our partnership has produced over the years, yet within this ever changing business there can arise differences in vision and goals. These differences have now come to a point where we feel like parting ways would be best for us, and best for sony.

As a hands-on band, we feel so grateful for our newfound freedom. We are continually dreaming up ways to bridge the gap between the audience and the stage; this feels like an incredible step in that direction. A huge thank you to bob, amy, nicole and tim over at columbia who were there from the beginning. We would also like to thank our musical family here in the states and abroad for sticking with us through these columbia years. We couldn't have done it without you!
